Aquarium’s River Otter Triplets Celebrate 7th Birthday This Sunday

0

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is celebrating the North American river otters’ 7th birthday this Sunday, March 5. Oscar, Oliver, and Otis will get a special treat-filled ice cake and before the crowd sings Happy Birthday to them at 1:30 p.m.

The otters have been part of the Loveland Living Planet family since early 2012. They came to Utah from Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, New York when they were two-years-old. Since then, their joyful and spontaneous personalities have quickly won over guests, becoming fan favorites. The playful brothers can often be found swimming and playing tag, and rolling around in the dirt or snow.

The otters’ birthday celebration kicks off Birthday Week at the Aquarium, March 5-11. During this week, Aquarium guests can enter to win exciting prizes daily including a birthday party for 20, a Penguin Encounter, and a $50 gift card.

The otters are in the Discover Utah gallery in an exhibit made possible by the George S. and Dolores Dolé Eccles Foundation. River otters were once found rampant throughout Utah waterways in the 1830’s. However, they began to disappear from Utah’s rivers and streams due to habitat degradation, water pollution, and unregulated trapping during settlement times. This has resulted in a decline in population since the early 20th century. North American river otters are now protected by the Utah Wildlife Code and trapping and hunting them is strictly prohibited.
