Filing Taxes Is Easy and Free with CAP Utah

0

The Community Action Partnership of Utah and the Earn It. Keep It. Save It. program are providing free income tax filing services for people across Utah. That’s an average savings of $211 for every person and family that utilizes the service. Filing for free is safe, reliable, and accessible.

There are two ways to file for free. First, individuals and families who earned $60,000 or less in 2014 can file online at UtahTaxHelp.org. Second, individuals and families who earned $53,000 or less in 2014 can file in person at one of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. Those who want to utilize a VITA site should call 2-1-1 to make an appointment or reference UtahTaxHelp.org.

The IRS estimates that $51-70 million of the Earned Income Tax Credit goes unclaimed every year in Utah.

Using a reliable service ensures that tax filers receive the most accurate refund, and that their tax return includes all of the necessary forms. There are credits to be claimed, and their services make certain that tax filers get the credits they are due. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable credit for people who are working, but do not earn high incomes. The average EITC refund is $2,200 and can help elevate a family’s financial position at tax time. The IRS estimates that $51-70 million of the EITC goes unclaimed every year in Utah.

Additionally, this year the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) has tax implications. Through their services, you can ensure that the proper forms are filled out, and that the proper credits or exemptions are assigned and then submitted. Last year, with the help of 836 IRS certified volunteers and through online filing, CAP Utah prepared 18,897 tax returns. This saved Utahns $3.9 million dollars in tax preparation fees and infused $26 million in tax refunds back into the local economy.

“Offering free tax filing services in Utah is critical because it provides an avenue where individuals and families get the opportunity to keep more of their hard-earned income,” said Kate Rubalcava, Program Director for Earn It. Keep It. Save It. at CAP Utah. “It’s not necessary to worry about tax credits or forms when we have online software designed to walk people through their tax return. Not to mention hundreds of IRS certified volunteers who understand tax law and can electronically file tax returns
