The shelter has seen an increase in owner-surrendered cats – receiving 207 cats during the month of June, a 60 percent increase over the 2014 intake numbers.

It has been announced that the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) will waive the adoption fee for all of their cats aged one year and older through the month of June to celebrate National Adopt a Cat Month. This adoption special begins June 9 and runs through June 30, 2015, in the hope of easing the overpopulation of cats in the shelter. All adoptable cats are spayed and neutered, have their first set of vaccinations, and come with a free initial vet exam at participating veterinarians.

“We adopted out 30 cats this past weekend but had 71 surrendered to us,” said Jessica Almeida, transfer director of the Humane Society of Utah. “It’s urgent that we find good homes for these cats as soon as possible.”

The Humane Society of Utah’s Foster Program has received over 300 kittens so far this season. Many of the kittens are currently in foster care until they are of age to be adopted.

Older cats at the shelter see a decrease in adoptions when kittens become available. It is the HSU’s hope that more people choose to adopt an adult cat during the month of June.

So far this year, the Humane Society of Utah has reached a “no-kill” status for both dogs and cats but needs help finding homes for the abundance of cats it receives.

Interested adopters need to complete an adoption process to ensure a good fit for both the adopter and animal and receive information for any questions the new pet owner may have.

Research done at the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) by Dr. Margaret Slater with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), confirms that fee-waived cats are just as loved and valued as ones with a price tag. Fee-waived adopters are more likely to adopt long-term and make cash donations.
