Library patrons asked to vote for the name of the new mascot.

The polls have closed, the ballots have been tallied and the Salt Lake County Library system has announced Owl as the new mascot.

After sharing the election victory, Owl, delivered this acceptance statement: “I want to thank Turtle for putting up a hard fought campaign these last few weeks. I also want to let the people of Salt Lake County to know, Owl be there for you, these five words I swear to you.”

The mascot general election took many twists and turns for Owl and Turtle. Unexpectedly, numerous swing branches were identified during the campaign favoring both nominees. Several write-in candidates were submitted mid-election to spoil their paths to this prestigious position. As the polls closed on election day, hundreds of voters showed their support for a new County Library mascot with some even waiting in line until midnight to cast their vote.

As with most political campaigns, the real work begins now. Owl needs a name and anyone interested in picking their favorite name is invited to vote at their neighborhood County Library, on Facebook, and slcolibrary.org/vote through December 31.

In addition to voting, everyone is encouraged to share their vote on social media using the hashtag #VoteCountyLibrary. The winning name will be announced during an inauguration ceremony held in January 2017.
