Sealants for Smiles® celebrated the placement of 100,000 sealants today at Meadowlark Elementary; a significant milestone for the non-profit organization that focuses on improving oral health of Utah’s at-risk children.

The weeklong event falls in conjunction with Love Utah Give Utah’s Day of Giving, a 24-hour event that will raise funds on March 26th, 2015, for local non-profit organizations.

Meadowlark Elementary is a Title I School that participates in the Sealants for Smiles® program. As students received free fluoride treatment and sealants, the achievement was recognized among Salt Lake City School District officials, representatives from Dental Select and leaders from Sealants for Smiles®.

In addition to placing more than 100,000 sealants on at-risk children, the program has visited 435 schools, provided oral health education to 138,000 children, administered 65,800 health screenings by a licensed dental professional and provided more than $12 million worth of dental services at no cost to families or schools.

As the only school-based comprehensive preventive dental program in Utah, Sealants for Smiles® currently visits low-income elementary schools primarily in Salt Lake, Davis and Weber Counties. Sealants for Smiles® uses portable dental units in the schools to provide free services including: age specific oral health education, oral health screenings and exams by licensed Utah professionals, fluoride varnish for all children seen and placement of dental sealants on eligible 1st and 2nd permanent molars. All parents receive a letter listing the care provided and a list of available resources for follow-up dental care.
