The Humane Society of Utah gives away 100 free cat sterilization vouchers Oct. 5
The Humane Society of Utah (HSU) joins Best Friends Animal Society and Salt Lake County Animal Services in the Fix on the Fifth event Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017. All three organizations will be offering free cat sterilization surgeries to help prevent more homeless cats in the community. The Humane Society of Utah will be giving away 100 free cat spay/neuter vouchers between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the HSU Clinic located at 4242 S 300 W in Murray, Utah. Vouchers will be given on a first come, first served basis; limit one voucher per household.
“Getting your pet spayed/neutered is the most effective and humane way to decrease the number of homeless animals in shelters,” said Pauline Edwards, HSU clinic director. “You’ll also see health and behavioral benefits if you sterilize your pets when they’re young.”
Owners do not need to bring their cat with them to receive a voucher and surgeries will not be performed the same day. Cats between four months to 4 years of age that weigh at least 2 pounds with current vaccinations are eligible for sterilization surgery with a voucher. Proof of current cat vaccinations must be provided before scheduling the surgery appointment. If a cat is not current on their vaccines, owners can still receive a voucher, but vaccinations must be received two weeks before the surgery appointment. Vaccinations can be performed on a walk-in basis through the HSU Clinic or a personal veterinarian.
While many shelters in Utah, including the HSU, have achieved no-kill status for dogs and cats, an overwhelming number of homeless cats remain. From early spring through winter each year, shelters around the United States are inundated with adult mother cats and litters of kittens. This “Kitten Season” is a heavy burden on shelters and the euthanasia of cats during this time increases. By spaying/neutering more cats in Utah communities, HSU is helping reduce the need for euthanasia of healthy, adoptable cats in Utah’s shelters.
